"Sheltered instruction is an approach for teaching content to English learners in strategic ways that make the subject matter concepts comprehensible while promoting the students' English language development."
Personal Bio
My name is Heather Bruneau and I am the creator of this website. I have been teaching for eight years and have taught kindergarten, 1st, 2nd, and 6th grade. I am currently finishing my Graduate Degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) at Rhode Island College. I have created this website to compile all of my search about the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) method. This is an area of interest to me for several reasons. First, I teach in a low-incidence school and Sheltered English Immersion (SEI) is the chosen method for providing support to English Language Learners (ELLs). In addition, I'm looking to teach ESL at an elementary school, middle school, or community college. I believe the SIOP model is at the core of any strong SEI or ESL program. Because of my interest in SIOP, I embarked on a journey of Professional Development during which I read several books, viewed webinars, enrolled in an online course, and created this website as a compilation of the most helpful resources I found. Currently, I use this website as a place to pool together information in an organized fashion. In the future, I hope to share this website with teachers as one resource that provides them with the support they need to successfully implement the SIOP model in their classrooms. If you have found additional resources that I could add to this site, please email me at [email protected] . I welcome all suggestions!
